KOALA PRESERVATION SOCIETY of New South Wales

Adopt Cathie Kitty

This very dark brown ball of mischief was named “Kitty” because of her unusual rescue location. A number of lawn bowlers at the Lake Cathie Bowling Club noticed a small joey sitting alone in a tree right behind the clubhouse. As Lake Cathie has a good koala population, these locals knew that a very small koala would not normally be left alone in a tree without its mother being nearby. Becoming concerned, they contacted the Koala Hospital.

One of our rescuers easily removed the little joey from the tree, not a good sign in itself, as she showed very little resistance to human handling. The decision was made to call her “Kitty” as this is a bowling term used for a particular bowl in the game of lawn bowls.

After a thorough examination at the Hospital, it was confirmed that Kitty not only had conjunctivitis (an eye infection often occurring when an animal is under stress), but was in very poor body condition – a strong indication that she had either been abandoned or orphaned some time previously. Kitty was immediately placed in Home Care and it was not long before she was thriving.

Kitty was released back into the Lake Cathie area.
