Adopt Bonny Ash

This beautiful little female joey is the daughter of Bonny Fire, one of the Koala Hospital's permanent bushfire residents. Sometime in late December 2004 a male patient at the Koala Hospital, Crestwood Ryan, decided to climb out of his yard and visit Bonny Fire in a midnight tryst.

Early in 2005, staff noticed a slight bump in Bonny Fire's pouch and were delighted to discover there was a tiny joey moving around.  It was with great excitement the staff began to watch Bonny Fire's pouch grow bigger by the day.  On some days a small leg or a hand would hang out of the pouch, and there was always continual wriggling.  Poor Bonny Fire!!! The little bundle of fur emerged and began to snuggle against Bonny Fire's belly for short periods, returning to the pouch for a feed, warmth and security.

Eventually the joey became too big for the pouch, but still stayed very close to her mother. As the little joey matured, she began to climb on her mother's back and was transported around the gunyahs in Yard 9 for all to see.  The many visitors and the staff of the Hospital were continually delighted with her antics. A competition to name the joey resulted in her being called Bonny Ash.

When Ash grew to a good weight and size, Bonny Fire decided it was time for Ash to become independent and left her alone in the trees in the yards. After a period of dehumanizing in a yard with other joeys, Bonny Ash was released into the bush in 2006, to start a new life of her own.
