Adopt a Wild Koala

If you are wondering what to buy as a gift for someone who "has everything" then this is an ideal solution to your problem.

Our Adopt A Wild Koala Program is the major source of fund raising for the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.

Cathie Jack

The koalas offered for adoption are those who have been admitted to our hospital, successfully treated and then released back into the wild - hence the name, "Adopt A Wild Koala".

The cost of an adoption is AU$40 within Australia and AU$50 overseas per year.

By sharing in the adoption of a wild koala you will receive an adoption package which consists of a Certificate of Adoption that has the photo of the adopted koala on the front, the name of the person adopting the koala, the name of the koala and the date of adoption. As well as the Certificate the package also contains a story about the adopted koala, a vinyl sticker with the KPS Logo and the words "I Have Adopted A Wild Koala", a coloured pamphlet about the Hospital and a booklet about koalas.

Your adoption helps with the rescue and treatment of sick and injured koalas and release back to home range if possible; also the preservation and expansion of habitat, collection of information for research relating to habitat, disease, nutrition and habits of wild koalas and to provide educational material, to increase public awareness of all aspects of the koala.

"Gum Tips" newsletter is produced each quarter and contains informative reports about what has been happening at the hospital, plus interesting and humorous anecdotes together with a hospital report listing all admissions and releases etc. for the quarter. Gum Tips is available on our web site.

A reminder will be issued when the adoption is due for renewal.

Please note: Most of the koalas we treat at the Koala Hospital are released to home ranges around the Port Macquarie area. Sometimes these koalas return to us for treatment over ensuing years, and because we microchip all koalas prior to release, we are able to identify them on readmission. Very occasionally, a koala on our "Adopt A Wild Koala" program returns to us and, despite our very best efforts, does not survive. Should this happen to a koala you have adopted, we will advise you of this when the adoption comes up for renewal and hope that you understand that such sad events are out of our control. However, please be assured that by adopting your koala, you have contributed towards veterinary costs, hospital maintenance, purchasing of equipment and medications, planting eucalyptus trees, education and media awareness campaigns, and research into koala disease. Your support helps us in our ongoing work to save more koalas.
